The better pool for a North Texas home depends on the design, lot, access, soil and drainage plan, maintenance preferences, and the quality of the installation. Gunite/concrete is usually the stronger fit when the homeowner wants a fully custom shape, depth, spa, elevation change, or architectural feature. Fiberglass is often the stronger fit when a factory-designed shell suits the yard and the priorities are a smooth surface, a more defined product selection, and faster shell installation.

Neither material automatically solves North Texas soil movement or groundwater. A successful pool begins with site-specific planning: utility and access review, excavation conditions, drainage, appropriate engineering or manufacturer requirements, sound plumbing, correct installation procedures, and a builder who stands behind the entire project.

What Do “Gunite” and “Fiberglass” Actually Mean?

Gunite is a type of shotcrete—not a separate pool material

In the pool industry, “gunite pool” is often used as a broad consumer term for a reinforced concrete pool. Technically, the American Shotcrete Association defines shotcrete as concrete or mortar projected at high velocity onto a surface. Dry-mix shotcrete is commonly called gunite; wet-mix shotcrete arrives with the ingredients already mixed.

For a homeowner, the important issue is not only which placement method is named in the proposal. The structural design, reinforcing steel, concrete mixture, crew skill, nozzle technique, substrate preparation, curing, penetrations, waterproofing or watertight details, and interior finish all affect the result. This guide uses “gunite/concrete” for readability.

Fiberglass is a finished shell manufactured off site

A fiberglass pool is formed in a controlled manufacturing environment and delivered to the property as a completed shell. The visible interior is typically a gelcoat surface. Steps, benches, tanning ledges, and other elements are built into the selected model rather than shaped freely during excavation.

The factory-made shell can reduce some on-site construction stages, but it does not make installation automatic. The excavation, base preparation, shell placement, level checks, plumbing, backfill, filling, drainage, electrical bonding, equipment, decking, barriers, permits, and inspections still require coordinated work.

1. Design Flexibility and Backyard Fit

Gunite/concrete offers the widest design freedom. The pool can respond to the home’s architecture, property lines, views, grade changes, an outdoor room, or an irregular usable area. A designer can create custom steps, benches, tanning ledges, beach entries, integrated spas, raised walls, perimeter overflows, negative edges, and water depths—subject to engineering, safety, code, and budget.

That flexibility is especially valuable when the pool must solve several problems at once. On a sloped lot, for example, the shell, retaining conditions, drainage, deck elevations, and view may need to work as one composition. On a compact lot, a custom shape may preserve circulation or fit around easements and existing structures.

Fiberglass offers selection rather than unlimited customization. Manufacturers provide families of rectangular, freeform, plunge, lap-style, and spa-inclusive models. Many include attractive steps, benches, ledges, and safety-related features. If one of those molds matches the desired dimensions and use, the result can feel intentional rather than compromised.

The key is to choose the model after reviewing the actual site and how the family will use the pool. Confirm the exterior shell dimensions—not just the interior water dimensions—the placement tolerances, setbacks, equipment area, deck space, delivery route, and the location of every built-in feature. A shell that looks ideal in a brochure may not leave enough room for furniture, gates, drainage, or circulation on a specific lot.

Design advantage: gunite/concrete for true customization; fiberglass when a well-designed production model already meets the brief.

2. Installation Schedule and Backyard Disruption

Gunite/concrete construction includes excavation, steel reinforcement, stub plumbing, shell placement, curing, tile and coping, equipment, utilities, decking, interior finish, filling, start-up, inspections, and site restoration. Weather, engineering, permitting, material lead times, inspections, design complexity, and related outdoor-living work affect the sequence.

The concrete shell is only one milestone. Proper curing matters. The American Shotcrete Association’s pool guidance recommends a minimum seven-day curing period and notes that hot, dry, or windy conditions can increase rapid moisture loss and shrinkage risk. The builder should explain its placement, curing, quality-control, and start-up procedures rather than promising a schedule based only on excavation day.

Fiberglass can compress the shell phase because the pool arrives formed and finished. Excavation and base preparation occur before delivery; the shell may then be lifted into place in a relatively short window. Filling and backfilling are commonly coordinated so pressures remain balanced, following the shell manufacturer’s installation requirements.

However, “installed in days” should not be confused with “the entire backyard completed in days.” Design approval, permits, utility locating, shell manufacturing or delivery, access preparation, excavation, plumbing, equipment, electrical work, decking, fencing, inspections, cleanup, and weather all affect the full schedule. Complex hardscape or outdoor-living work can take longer than setting the shell.

Schedule advantage: fiberglass usually provides the faster and more predictable shell installation; the real completion date still depends on the complete scope.

3. North Texas Clay Soil, Drainage, and Groundwater

Many North Texas sites contain soils that change volume as moisture conditions change. That does not mean every DFW lot has the same soil profile, bearing conditions, fill history, groundwater, slope, or drainage pattern. The correct response is site-specific investigation and planning—not a blanket claim that one shell material is always safe and the other is always risky.

What matters for a gunite/concrete pool

A gunite/concrete shell is a rigid reinforced structure. Its performance depends on an appropriate structural design and competent construction. Important considerations may include soil conditions, excavation observations, reinforcing steel, shell thickness and geometry, plumbing penetrations, concrete quality, placement and consolidation, curing, deck connections, drainage, and management of hydrostatic pressure.

Concrete’s rigidity and custom engineering can be advantageous, but “concrete is stronger” is not a complete soil plan. A poorly designed or poorly built shell can crack. Some cracks are cosmetic; others may require evaluation. The proposal should identify who is responsible for engineering, inspections, placement quality, curing, drainage, and warranty decisions.

What matters for a fiberglass pool?

A fiberglass shell must be supported and backfilled according to the manufacturer’s current instructions. Details typically include a level prepared base, approved bedding and backfill, staged filling and backfilling, stable plumbing support, pressure testing, correct deck or collar details, and a way to observe or manage groundwater.

Installers may use a permanent sump or monitoring pipe near the pool so subsurface water can be checked and managed by a qualified professional. This is important because an empty or partially empty shell can be vulnerable to external groundwater pressure. A fiberglass pool should not be drained casually or without product-specific professional guidance.

Fiberglass is sometimes marketed as “flexible” in expansive soil, but flexibility alone does not make installation immune to movement, voids, washout, uneven support, plumbing stress, deck settlement, or groundwater. Product engineering and installation discipline matter.

Drainage belongs in both designs

Surface water should move away from the pool, house, deck, and other structures. Roof runoff, downspouts, neighboring grades, retaining walls, low spots, irrigation, and deck pitch can change moisture conditions around the project. The plan may require grading, drains, swales, retaining or subdrainage measures, and a controlled discharge path.

Ask how the builder evaluated soil and groundwater risk, what observations or reports informed the design, and how drainage will work after the pool and deck change the yard. If conditions warrant geotechnical or structural input, that should be established before construction rather than improvised after excavation.

North Texas conclusion: neither material wins by default. The better choice is the system that is designed and installed correctly for the actual lot.

4. Surface Feel, Water Care, and Routine Maintenance

Fiberglass has a smooth gelcoat surface that many swimmers find comfortable underfoot. The comparatively nonporous finish can be easier to brush and may give algae fewer surface irregularities in which to take hold. This is the basis for many lower-maintenance claims.

Lower maintenance does not mean maintenance-free. A fiberglass pool still needs circulation, filtration, sanitation, debris removal, brushing, equipment care, freeze planning, and regular testing and adjustment of water chemistry. Improper chemistry can damage surfaces and equipment and may affect warranty coverage.

Gunite/concrete pools receive a separate interior finish. Traditional plaster can feel smooth when installed and maintained well. Quartz and exposed-aggregate finishes offer different textures, colors, visual depth, and durability profiles. The finish choice affects appearance, comfort, start-up, chemistry, cleaning, and eventual resurfacing.

Cementitious finishes are more porous than fiberglass gelcoat and can show scale, staining, etching, mottling, discoloration, or surface wear when materials, application, filling, start-up, water balance, or ongoing care are not managed correctly. The National Plasterers Council provides specific guidance for filling and initial start-up because the first days and weeks matter to a new finish.

For either pool, ask the builder to define the handoff: who fills it, starts the equipment, records initial water readings, adds chemicals, brushes the surface, teaches the homeowner, and documents warranty compliance. A premium shell paired with a weak start-up and service plan is not a premium outcome.

Maintenance advantage: fiberglass often has the simpler surface-care profile; both pool types require consistent water and equipment care.

5. Durability, Refinishing, and Repairability

Both pool types can provide long service when designed, installed, and maintained well. Durability should be discussed as a system—shell, surface, plumbing, equipment, deck, drainage, and workmanship—not as a single lifetime claim.

Gunite/concrete ownership over time

The structural shell and the interior finish are separate components. A cementitious finish is a wear surface and will eventually need renewal. The National Plasterers Council notes that pool plaster can last up to 20 years with proper maintenance, but actual service life varies with material, installation, start-up, water chemistry, use, environment, and repairs.

One advantage is that established resurfacing methods can renew a gunite/concrete pool and update its color or texture. Tile, coping, fittings, and equipment can also be renovated. Structural movement, active cracks, leaks, hollow areas, or bond failures should be diagnosed rather than hidden beneath a cosmetic coating.

Fiberglass ownership over time

The gelcoat surface does not follow the same replaster cycle. Staining, fading, blistering, cracks, impact damage, or other surface and shell issues are product- and condition-specific. Qualified technicians can repair many fiberglass problems, but the method, color match, visibility, cure, and warranty treatment should be discussed in advance.

Review the written warranty carefully. A long “shell warranty” may not provide identical coverage for the cosmetic surface, osmosis, fading, labor, water removal and replacement, access, decking, plumbing, or consequential damage. Confirm the warrantor, coverage period, transferability, maintenance duties, exclusions, and claim process.

Repairability conclusion: gunite/concrete offers a familiar resurfacing path; fiberglass avoids routine replastering but still needs a clear product-specific repair and warranty plan.

6. Project Cost and Long-Term Ownership

There is no dependable rule that fiberglass is always cheaper or gunite is always more expensive. The total is shaped by the pool model or custom design, size, depth, excavation, soil conditions, access, delivery or concrete placement, crane requirements, engineering, plumbing, equipment, automation, sanitation, heating, electrical service, decking, coping, fencing, drainage, retaining work, permits, landscaping, and outdoor-living features.

Fiberglass pricing may be more predictable when a standard shell, ordinary delivery, open access, simple excavation, and straightforward deck fit the property. A large or premium shell, distant crane placement, difficult transport, extensive retaining or drainage work, custom coping, broad decking, and upgraded equipment can narrow the apparent gap.

Gunite/concrete spans a wider design and price range. A compact geometric pool with restrained finishes is different from a large freeform pool with raised spa, water features, complex elevation work, premium tile, and a complete outdoor room. The ability to customize also creates more opportunities to add scope.

Long-term cost comparisons should include realistic care rather than unsupported lifetime totals. Consider:

  • Routine chemicals, cleaning, electricity, heating, and professional service
  • Equipment replacement and warranty terms
  • Interior resurfacing for gunite/concrete
  • Product-specific gelcoat or fiberglass repairs if needed
  • Leak detection, plumbing access, drainage maintenance, and deck repairs
  • Water removal, refill, start-up, access, and restoration associated with major work

Ask each builder for a complete, line-item scope based on the same design brief. A shell-only price and a turnkey backyard proposal are not comparable.

7. Delivery, Equipment Access, and Tight Lots

Access can decide the material before finishes are discussed.

A fiberglass shell must travel from the street to the excavation without unacceptable risk to the shell, home, utilities, trees, rooflines, power lines, neighboring property, or crew. The route may require a crane. The builder should document the selected model’s exterior dimensions, rigging plan, reach, setup area, overhead and underground hazards, permissions, street or lane restrictions, and contingency plan.

Gunite/concrete materials are assembled or placed on site, so the full pool shape does not need to pass through the side yard. Tight access can still add cost. Excavators, hauling equipment, reinforcing steel, plumbing, shotcrete hoses, pumps, decks, demolition, spoil removal, and workers need a safe route. Smaller equipment and more hand labor may extend the schedule.

Do not assume a crane makes fiberglass impractical or that a narrow gate makes gunite easy. Ask for a written access and protection plan covering fences, driveways, landscaping, irrigation, neighboring property, street use, cleanup, and restoration.

Access advantage: gunite/concrete is generally more adaptable when a complete shell cannot reach the yard; every project still requires a practical construction route.

8. Spas, Ledges, Water Features, and Safe Use

Gunite/concrete allows the pool and spa to be designed as a single custom composition. Spillways, raised beams, water walls, perimeter effects, benches, steps, ledges, and equipment hydraulics can be coordinated around the site and visual goals. Complexity increases the need for sound engineering, waterproofing or watertight detailing, hydraulic design, finish transitions, and maintenance access.

Fiberglass models often include molded benches, tanning ledges, steps, and sometimes integrated spa configurations. These features are consistent and easy to evaluate before purchase, but their position and dimensions cannot be freely moved. Separate fiberglass spas and other compatible features may expand the design options.

Depth and diving require special care. Some fiberglass models are explicitly non-diving pools. No pool should be represented as safe for diving unless its dimensions, equipment, markings, installation, and use comply with the manufacturer, the applicable residential inground-pool standard, adopted codes, and the approved design. A custom gunite pool is not automatically a diving pool merely because its depth can be changed.

The current ANSI/PHTA/ICC-5 standard addresses residential inground swimming pools. Local adopted requirements, barriers, alarms, electrical bonding, suction safety, entrapment prevention, setbacks, and inspections also apply. Confirm the current rules for the project’s jurisdiction and address.

Which Pool Type Is Better for Your Priorities?

Choose gunite/concrete when the architecture leads the decision

Gunite/concrete is usually the better starting point when you want an original shape, a precise relationship to the house, a custom spa, complex elevations, a negative edge, broad material choice, unusual depths, or a pool that must fit an irregular space. It is also more adaptable when a full fiberglass shell cannot be delivered to the yard.

Be prepared for more site-built stages, a longer schedule, careful start-up, and eventual finish renewal. Select the builder for design and construction quality—not simply for the ability to shoot a shell.

Choose fiberglass when a proven model fits the brief

Fiberglass is compelling when an available shell provides the right length, width, depth, entries, ledges, benches, and appearance; the delivery route is workable; and a smooth surface and faster shell phase are high priorities. The manufactured selection process can help contain design decisions and make the pool itself more predictable.

Do not treat the shell as a drop-in appliance. Choose an installer who follows the current manufacturer instructions and can explain base preparation, leveling, backfill, fill sequencing, plumbing support, pressure testing, groundwater access, drainage, deck connection, warranty registration, and service.

If you are still undecided, compare two concept-level scopes

Ask a builder experienced with the relevant systems to evaluate the same yard and program. One concept can use a suitable fiberglass model; the other can use a custom gunite/concrete design. Compare the full plan, not generic pros and cons:

  • Usable water area, depth, entries, ledges, spa, and circulation
  • Deck, furniture, gate, equipment, and maintenance access
  • Delivery or construction route and site restoration
  • Drainage, retaining, soil, and groundwater response
  • Equipment, utilities, automation, sanitation, and heating

The “better” pool often becomes obvious when both options are drawn and scoped for the actual property.

  1. What exact design or shell model is included? Request dimensioned plans showing the waterline, exterior shell, depths, steps, benches, ledges, spa, equipment, setbacks, deck, gates, and drainage.
  2. How were the lot, soil, fill, slope, and groundwater evaluated? Ask whether structural or geotechnical input is recommended and who makes that decision.
  3. What installation standard will be followed? For fiberglass, request the current manufacturer manual. For gunite/concrete, ask about engineering, reinforcement, mixture, placement, crew qualifications, curing, and inspections.
  4. How will access work? Identify equipment, delivery or crane requirements, overhead and buried utilities, street needs, property protection, neighbor permissions, and restoration.
  5. How will water be managed around and beneath the pool? Review grading, deck pitch, drains, roof runoff, retaining conditions, discharge, groundwater observation, and empty-pool precautions.
  6. What is included after the shell? Confirm plumbing, equipment, electrical, bonding, gas, heater, automation, sanitation, coping, tile, decking, fencing, permits, cleanup, startup, and orientation.
